Google buys Motorola Mobility What does this do to the other Android partners? “Google claims its Android operating system will remain open to all manufacturers, despite the plans for the acquisition.”

Are things posted on social networks no longer yours, but “Public Domain?” The BBC seems to think so. But by their logic, so are newspaper stories outside a pay wall, blog posts, and well, anything you can see without a password. TIP: Put a copyright notice in your Twitter Profile. I did.

NEWS:

Outlets spin HP TouchPad price cuts. Outlets are continuing to discuss the implications of the separate $100 discounts on the HP TouchPad offered by HP and Staples, noting that they could be combined (at some locations) to bring the device’s cost down to $300 (16GB) or $400 (32GB). GigaOM and PreCentral fight the notion that the discounts are not an indication of failure, pointing out that HP discounts many products on a rolling basis, that the price drops may help boost adoption of the platform, and that the low price points still return a profit to HP. In light of the price cuts, HP is offering $50 in App Catalog credit to TouchPad owners who purchased the tablet before Aug. 4.

Apple takes on iOS accessory stores in NYC, fake resellers in China; Oracle drags Motorola into Android case. Apple has received a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against retail stores in NYC that sell accessories for iOS devices. The company recently filed a trademark complaint against stores Apple Story and Fun Zone, as well as a number of unnamed businesses. Additionally, Chinese authorities are working to prevent unauthorized vendors from using the Apple logo or any related brand name, though the current ban is reportedly somewhat ineffective. Separately, Oracle has asked a court to force Motorola to supply information about its implementation of Android. Oracle claims, “Deposition is necessary to determine if Motorola uses the accused technology in developing applications for Android, because Motorola has not produced any documents regarding its internal application development.”

ANDROID TIP: 2: Improve Voice Recognition (From Maximum Tech)

Anyone on Android version 2.2 or newer has likely tried the integrated Voice Recognition, and while it can be surprisingly accurate at times, it can also be amazingly (sometimes comically) wrong. You can help prevent these inaccuracies by going to Settings > Voice Intput & Output > Voice Recognizer Settings and enabling “Personalized Recognition.” This gives Google permission to store various bits of personal data pertaining to your speech patterns and improving speech recognition over time. You can also turn off the offensive word filter from this page.

EEE Transformer and Galaxy Tab 10.1 in head to head. Matthew challenges their conclusion that Tab 10.1 wins on “portability.” His quote:

Wow, I’m completely shocked with his conclusion. So the more portable one wins? I’m surprised by that considering that both are pretty portable and fairly light, something that 99% of people would be happy with either. On the other hand, the usability and price in my mind are two factors that hold larger weight. “It is outfitted with more features – including extra USB ports and an SD slot on the keyboard dock” would be something that I would think has more significance than that it’s 45 pennies lighter.

Microsoft Word (in Office): I see many people struggle to select words, sentences, or paragraphs for editing in Word. It can be quite easy, and all done with the “clicks” of the mouse. For instance:

Select a word: Double click the left mouse button inside the word to be selected
Select a sentence: Simple. Hold down the CTRL key, and then select any word in the sentence (single click).
Select the whole paragraph: TRIPLE click any word in the paragraph.

Bokeh is a Japanese word that refers to the visual characteristics of defocused areas in a picture. Some glass is said to produce better bokeh than others, meaning that the defocused areas show soft edges and specular highlights that are more perfectly circular, not slightly amorphous.
The look can make for romantically dreamy backgrounds. Shooting at f/1.4, even if a wall is only several feet behind your subject, can produce a satisfyingly defocused backdrop that will throw all attention where you want it, as well as declutter whatever mess or distractions might have been back there.

Pop Photography also offers that the 85 mm lens is perfect for portraits and close ups–and the stock 55mm lens on most digital cameras is an 85mm equivalent.

VIDEO in eInk? You Betcha. And apparently color eInk, with video, is coming.

Recommendation: TripIt.com. I am trying it out (the free version) and it makes adding itineraries easy–not just from the email you receive, but into your calendars. And if you use Google Calendar it becomes quite easy to sync with your phones and tablets. (Not to mention the apps)

TAX TIME: And now is the time we often think about making Charitable donations (to help with NEXT year.) You might think about donating your computer to a school, or other charity. Be sure to completely wipe your hard drive. While we used to recommend you WIPE your hard drive, we now recommend you remove it, and physically destroy it. Hard drives are now true commodities and your older computer can still be useful with only a $50 hard drive installed.

NEWS:
Medicine and Technology merge again. Scientists have developed a “handheld” MRI Machine that sends its data to your smartphone. Designed to detect cancer, in some instances it has shown to outperform traditional diagnostic approaches.
On a related, but more pedestrian, note, the FDA has approved an app to let doctors view and diagnose traditional MRI CT and PETimaging using their cellphones. Currently iPhone only.

Find programs quickly simply by typing their names. In Windows 7, click on the WIndows icon on the bottom left, and in the search box start typing the name of the program (such as “restore”) Don’t hit enter–but as you type choices that match that will show up above the text entry box.

IPHONE TIP: type your dial in numbers in “notes”, include ,,,, to wait for passcode entry, and then type the passcode. paste the entire # as a contact. ex: 8
