Interesting points. This gets into the debate that some have about the higher ed system being used as a "weed out" mechanism, limiting opportunities for those who are capable, but unable to obtain the resources required to get access to the information. I'd like to get Steve's thoughts on this, since he is much closer to the educational angle of things.

On a recent episode of Get The Next Real Tech, you asked the question, "Should information be free?" Based on what I heard about Harvard and MIT offering free classes, I extended the question a bit and asked myself, "Should information, namely higher education, be free?" The goal of these universities and others, according to the OpenCourseWare Consortium, is to advance formal and informal learning through the worldwide sharing and use of free, open, high-quality education materials organized as courses. I struggle to understand their strategy.

Presently, the elite schools offering open access do not grant credentials, but that is currently being discussed. If these schools did grant credentials, wouldn't that dilute the schools' brands? Many aspiring business school students look at the acceptance rates as a signal of the value of the education. Other than just being altruistic, I don't see why selective universities would risk their brands by offering credits for online versions of courses. Turning more people away has become an essential part the "business model" of many schools.

If elite schools like Chicago Booth offered the same MBA credential, it could cause serious confusion during job hunting. When you claim to be “Chicago Booth-educated,” nobody doubts that you have gone through two years of a rigorous course load and are a prestigious degree holder. If my school offered an equivalent online credential, we may be viewed in the same way as the University of Phoenix. (No offense to the University of Phoenix listeners, but it is not the same.) From a selfish standpoint, rampant certification may eventually breed mistrust between employees and employers and negatively impact our ability to command prestigious positions, credibility, and big salaries. So, no, I don't think information should be free.

Hmmm... I am not sure that the iPad is a "Kindle killer." Amazon has positioned themselves well with their two separate business units, so that the Kindle (as reader/book seller) can easily integrate into the iPad, just as it currently works quite nicely on the iPad Nano (er, iPhone and iPod Touch.) I wrote on this back at my blog (along with a few other thoughts on "killer" products.

You do bring an interesting discussion forward though in mentioning netbooks. It didn't seem to me that Jobs was trying to reach the geeks, but rather the huddled masses that yearn for something less "techno-centric" than the netbook. There are those that find netbooks "too geeky" and yet they crave portable computing. THESE are the people the iPad will reach.

Oh--and the people that I have heard that say this will replace their Macbook when they travel.

Another option to do online backup is the new CloudBerry Online Backup powered by Amazon S3 with friendly user interface, strong data encryption and scheduling capabilities.
What safer place to keep your files than Amazon's servers? You can download your copy at http://cloudberrydrive.com

i love blu-ray. i've watched 1080i downloads via xbox live marketplace before, and the quality isn't fantastic. there's substantial difference in "transformers" on an xbox at 1080i via download and the same movie on blu-ray disc at 1080p.

i admit i haven't watched netflix's instant watch since i don't have a netflix account, but i do watch hulu often. hulu, which is not in full high definition, comes through in better than standard cable quality for sure. however, even at 480p, my internet struggles to watch glee and greek episodes (yeah, i admit it...) without hiccoughs.

digital distribution may be good for games since graphics information is rendered from code, but distributing whole movies via the internet is *expensive*. all that throughput and bandwidth, the time it takes to download uncompressed video (and audio) ... and anyone with comcast internet will tell you how unreliable the service is. you don't want to be at the climax of "bad boys 2" only to have your movie pause and start to buffer again.

what makes windows so frustrating for me is that it's my work machine. i could tolerate issues, bugs, etc. when i'm at home just surfing the internet. when i'm in work, though? i'm generally doing something that's important.

my web browser unexpectedly crashing at home wouldn't be too much of an issue - but having ms excel take a dump while you're working on a client deliverable? that's what makes it so irritating to work with.

i think the local news gets worse the farther away from a major metropolitan area that you get. the local news in norfolk/virginia beach is far worse than the local news in philadelphia. (just think about the state college local news..)

i watch wavy news 10 in va beach here because the weekend weather girl is also a penn state grad :D

.. and that's pretty much the only reason.

i agree that microsoft has taken a dive lately. it's because of their products, but mostly because of their image i think.

windows has been pretty bland since 95. every iteration since has pretty much been a new skin on the same underlying platform. there have been some amazing things independent linux developers have done with the user interface for the various distros, and everyone knows apple is the king of the UI world with not just OS X but all their devices. stability has improved quite a bit, but in the last week alone in the office i saw 2 co-workers get blue screens on their laptops.

add in the original zune which failed incredibly (especially with that brown option) and that's really damaged their reputation. they're not hip. they're not cutting edge. they're not pushing limits.

however, i think they're doing well with the xbox 360 (i hate my ps3 except for the blu-ray player in it), the first looks i've seen of the zune HD look pretty cool actually, and using the RC of windows 7 on a virtual machine - i have to say it's actually not bad. but is it a little too late? maybe. the hardest thing to do is fix a damaged reputation — and microsoft is definitely damaged goods.

Good point. But, while the GV Mobile app does work over 3G, if you make calls using it, you still use your AT&T minutes. So, if anything, it would make sense to allow GV Mobile. This one really smells funny. I can see why the FCC is asking Apple and AT&T a lot of questions about this one.

there's a slight difference, but the difference is still there.

This is actually a very useful service. I've used it numerous times. Sometimes it doesn't pull up the correct location you want and it would be easier to talk to a person but 99% of the time its great.

AMS,

So far, the synching has been working great for me. Just confirm that your Kindle and your iPhone are both registered to the same account that manages your Kindle. Then, when you open the Kindle app on your phone, you should have a section called "Archived Items". These are items that you have already purchased for your Kindle. Go ahead and select one. Then, once the item is downloaded to your phone, both your Kindle and your phone should keep track of the last page read on either device.

To manually trigger the synch, just touch the page you are reading on your phone and then touch the bottom-right icon (arrows going in a circle). This then checks to see if you have read further ahead on your Kindle.

Hope that helps.

Amazon has an e-mail that it forwards to publishers alerting them that customers would like to read the text in the Kindle format. I have used it because I find that many older books are unavailable. I am sure this must be a nightmare for publishers trying to decide how many copies to print.

I am a Kindle 1 owner. My biggest adjustment was overcoming my vanity. Maybe it's just me...but I miss displaying all of my books around my home and office.

The Kindle is very compact and helps pass the time during my commute on the DC Metro. The wireless access from anywhere is great. The screen is easy on the eyes and I feel like I am reading at a much faster pace.

Good points. Books will always have a place in our hearts, for sure. The tactile experience is something we all know and love.

I must say, the digital paper approach on the Kindle is much easier on the eyes than I thought it would be. But, books have their place too.

Like you, I'm just glad that it has the potential to reignite passion for reading.

My book is for sale on Amazon.com. Does that mean I can get it on the Kindle easily? I guess my publisher had to do it?

This is helpful, thanks. I have never used Kindle personally, so glad to hear about these different aspects. When I travel I see others using it and that Kindle is a great thing. Not having to carry a lot of books, only one unit, is a real plus. As people get used to reading online, I can see this being useful, and I think it is a great way to bring reading into the next gen. But I must confess, I love to touch the books I read, and it's easier on my eyes to read paper than electronics. Too, I love to walk into a whole rooms filled with books. Ah well.

Note to authors ... if you try to download a formatted book onto Kindle, it doesn't translate. You have to reformat. Amazon will place your book for you on Kindle free of charge if you list your book for sale on Amazon.com.

So great that people are reading!!
